Co-Founder at BlueMove
FIRST OFF, CAN YOU GIVE US A BIT OF BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT YOURSELF?
Natural born entrepreneur;). I lived in the US when I was a little kid and then I moved to Spain where I went to an American School. There I had my first small business ventures. After majoring in Finance & Management in Madrid, I worked for various companies in Spain and had small incursions into the entrepreneurial world. Then I moved to London to work in M&A (IBD) for Morgan Stanley. I worked between London and Madrid 4 years before founding Bluemove Carsharing almost 5 years ago.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS.
Bluemove is the car sharing operations leader in Spain and also a technology company that develops software for mobility products.
HOW DID THE IDEA FOR YOUR BUSINESS COME ABOUT?
My partner followed Zipcar in the US, and we talked about replicating their business in Spain... where the mobility revolution was yet to come. After 5-6 months of preparation the adventure began. I was naive enough to not see how hard it would be, so I did it. Sometimes that’s a good thing.
WHAT THREE PIECES OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO WANT TO BECOME ENTREPRENEURS?
One of the key attributes to survive in this world is definitely perseverance. As an entrepreneur one has to understand that he operates in a context of high uncertainty, and thus he will continuously make mistakes. The earlier you realise this, the better you live with your profession, without feeling you're doing it wrong. Behind every failure or mistake there is a great, highly valuable lesson that you have to use to strengthen your character. Being humble enough to identify these mistakes, failures and lessons builds a strong entrepreneur over time. So don´t be afraid, just push hard, use your common sense and be humble. The adventure is extraordinarily beautiful and full of insight, and if you persevere enough you can make a great life out of the profession.
Third piece of advice: Live your own life, not the one of someone else... So humbly listen to experience, and then make your own choices and build your own experience, doing what you want to do. I truly believe this is what gets you closer to happiness.
HAS EYES PLAYED ANY ROLE IN YOUR VENTURE?
Meeting great and inspirational people in EYES has helped me become a better entrepreneur... and a better person.
HOW DO YOU GENERATE NEW IDEAS?
I am constantly thinking about building businesses... And whenever I have an idea that I think could have value, I write it down in my secret blue book ;)... By now it has pages and pages of cool things that could be done.
In our business we have an area called Bluemove Labs, which is focused on idea generation and innovation. Our organisation is very much built upon the value of constant innovation as a means for survival.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
If you really want something and are willing to fight enough for it, you can achieve about anything you wish to achieve or accomplish in life. It really only depends on you.
WHAT HABITS HELPED MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL?
1. I am very methodic in my day to day. I keep focus on the plan I build my day upon. I make my days the product of what I want them to be and not what other people in my environment want of me.
2. Play hard and work hard, but with high levels of maintenance of your health (both mentally and physically).
3. Focus on people that love and like you, and forget about the ones’ that don't; no one is meant to be liked by all, so don’t panic about it.
